Standarized
tests require extensive verbal and vocabulary skills. Questions are often
answered incorrectly simply because the test-taker does not know the meaning of key
words used in the question. This book provides a comprehensive verbal and
vocabulary builder for the SAT, ACT, GRE, GMAT, and LSAT. Includes over 1700
words commonly seen on these tests, together with methods and tools designed to teach
the meaning of words in context. Also includes 16 carefully designed exercises and
16 practice sets. These exercises and practice sets clearly and concisely increase
vocabulary skills without the use of rote memorization. Book uses "self reference,"
antonyms, synonyms, and context to impact word meanings in a user friendly,
easy to learn manner.

Education Is The Key
by Jonathan
Perry 1/30/06
When I graduated from high school with an academic diploma, I had the requirements
needed to apply for college admission. But I chose instead to go into the work force
with an entry level job. I was not interested in going to school anymore. I wanted
to have money to spend as I pleased, and a job was the means to that end. My career
was just beginning to bloom when two years after graduation the Korean War began in
June, 1950. On October 31, 1951 I was drafted into the U.S. Army and later served
thirteen months in the combat support zone three miles behind the front line in Korea.
The late summer of 1953 found me out of the army and back at my job in a large midtown
Manhattan life insurance company. It was great to be home. Life was good. But it did
not take long before I realized that the other employees with whom I was competing
for higher level jobs were either college graduates or were going to college in the
evening. Furthermore, I had two years from the date of separation from the army to
enroll in college in order to receive veteran's benefits. The government would pay
for four years of college. It was a "no brainer", and besides, now I wanted to go
to college to further my education.
It took seven years attending evening classes at St. John's University in New York
City until I had enough credits and earned a bachelor of business administration degree.
During those years, every time I went on a job interview, I was told to come back
when I had my degree. It worked like a charm. One month before graduation, I was hired
by another insurance company. The following year I moved to another firm, and two
years later I was employed by the corporation from which I would later retire. Each
change resulted in a better job and a higher salary.
In the ensuing fifteen years, my career in management continued to grow with ever
increasing responsibility. I received moderate salary increases and several promotions,
and early on I was promoted to assistant secretary, the first rung on the corporate
officer ladder. In 1980 with my fiftieth birthday on the horizon, I remarked to my
wife one day that lately I had begun to feel old and tired, and that my career was
definitely stalled. She responded by saying "Why don't you go for your masters degree?
You always said you wanted to do that." What an outstandingly timely comment!
Within a few days I began to research masters programs at local Long Island, NY colleges,
and within one month I was accepted to Dowling College in Oakdale. I attended classes
once a week for four years and the entire cost was paid by my firm's tuition plan.
In May, 1986 at age 55, I graduated and received an MBA in management. But the best
was yet to come. During the next five years, I received two promotions and increased
my salary by 40%.
Yes, education is the key to success!
