Art or Porn: Sex on YouTube
by John
Quest 3/2/11
I have read some of the other articles on
this site that are a guide
for parents to the kind of sexual
content that can be found on YouTube. I decided to write this article
after I found nudity in full-length movies which anyone can watch on YouTube.
If you are a parent, please read this so that you can learn about how easy it is to
find nudity on YouTube. If you are under 18, I would ask you to please read
another article on this site, such as their articles on iCarly, Glee or Avatar.
Last year, YouTube got rid of the 10 minute cap in length of video
uploads, and now there are full length movies to watch at YouTube.
You will not find the latest and most popular movies on YouTube but you will find
older "B" movies, some of which were not popular or well known at the time of their
original release but which became "cult classics" over the years. You will find
adventure / monster movies like "Fire
Monsters Against The Son Of Hercules" featuring muscle men and women in animal skins
with poorly dubbed dialogue, and horror classics like Herschell Gordon Lewis' splatter
film "The
Wizard of Gore" which is similar to his first gore movie "Blood Feast" that
also features bloody dismemberings.

You will also find the subject of this article, nudist movies from the 1960s.
I found three full-length movies made by independent film producer Doris
Wishman (AllMovie
bio). These 3 YouTube videos show nudity but do not show genital areas or
anyone actually having sex. If you are offended by nudity, do not watch these
movies! How were these movies with nudity able to be made? It seems that
in the early 1960s, there was a sexploitation film market in America during the last
days of the Motion Picture Production Code, also known as the Hays
Code. This code was put in place by the movie industry in the 1930s as a
set of guidelines as to what could not be shown in films. But independent producers
such as Wishman were not following the rules. They also got around pornography
laws against nudity by showing non-sexual nudists and naturists at nudist camps.
The people in these movies were not involved in any kind of sex act.
Would you consider these art films, documentaries or porn? The Dictionary defines pornography as
obscene writing, photos or the like having little artistic merit designed to stimulate
sexual excitement. Apparently it is derived from from the
Greek words pornē (a harlot
or prostitute) and graphein (to write).
There were legal attempts to restrict these kinds of films and material, which led
to the 1964 Supreme Court case "Jacobellis v. Ohio," which
ruled that the constitution protects films as long as they are not "obscene." Judge
Potter Stewart did not clearly define obscenity or hard core pornography but
said, "I know it when I see it..."
Doris Wishman made 8 nudist films, also known as nudie cutie underground films, in
the early 1960s. Since there is no sex, just nudity, they were not deemed to
be obscene and were shown in certain adult theaters. There are two Doris Wishman
nudist movies, both filmed in 1961, which are on YouTube. The first is "Diary
Of A Nudist" about a newspaper man who comes across a nudist camp while hunting and
then sends his female secretary to the camp so she can write a story
about it.
The second 1961 Doris Wishman nudist film on YouTube is "Nude On The Moon" -
a Sci-Fi nudist movie filmed partly at South Florida attraction, the Coral
Castle. This movie is about two amateur scientists who build their own rocket
and fly to the moon. There, instead of a barren wasteland, they find a lush
garden paradise inhabited by"virtually naked telepathic humanoids" and one scientist
falls in love with their Goddess.
By the mid 1960s, movie standards and the public's tastes were changing. The
Production Code Administration had allowed women's breasts to be shown in "The
Pawnbroker" from Allied Artists American International Pictures starring Rod Steiger.
The afrementioned Supremem Court decision had taken place. Nudist camp movies
were becoming less commercially viable, so Doris Wishman switched to a new form of
sexploitation movie known as "roughie" films that mixed sex and violence. Here
is "Indecent Desires" from 1967, filmed in Black and White. It is the story
of a man who finds some sort of magic voodoo doll which is connected to a young woman
who feels whatever is done to the doll. The movie has very little violence but
does feature actresses Sharon Kent and Jackie Richards naked and in lingerie.
In all 3 of these films, genital areas are not shown and no one is actually having
sex.
Now you can judge for yourself - are these art flims, quasi-documentaries, sexploitation
films or pornography? Do they belong on YouTube? Would you want your young
children to find them on YouTube? It is true that these films are "flagged"
so that they can't be viewed unless you are signed in to YouTube and have signified
that you are over 18 according to the birth date you entered when you made your account.
Is that enough to keep children from seeing videos like this?
I agree with the conclusion reached in the related articles on this site. If
you are a parent, it is up to you to know what your young children are doing on the
internet. You don't want them to become involved with scandalous behavior and
go through what 11 year old Jessi
Slaughter endured. I believe it is your responsibility to educate yourself
about what is on YouTube. I hope this article was a help. Also, please
read YouTube's Parent
Resources page and their "Safety
Mode" page which "gives users the option to choose not to see mature content that
they may find find offensive..."
What if you are an adult and want to watch these kinds of movies? If you are
married, how would you react to your husband (or wife) wanting to watch these films?
Is it morally wrong to watch movies with nudity in them? These are questions
that, as an adult, you can answer for yourself. I would say that if you find
yourself addicted to this type of material - if you just can't wait to get in front
of your computer to watch and it is affecting other areas of your life - you might
want to stop or cut back in the amount of nudity you look at. If you need help,
here are a list of websites about "porn
addiction." If you feel you need more help, seek professional counseling.
Many people have been helped with this addiction and there is no shame in taking
steps to improve your life if you feel you have a problem.
