Banned Sex Music Videos on YouTube Is There Too Much Sex In Music Videos? by Anne Iredale   5/22/10 Sex sells and ever since Elvis swiveled his hips, it has been a bedfellow of pop music. With the coming of MTV in 1981, we didn't have to use our imaginations any more. It's all there for us. Artists have pushed the boundaries on suggestive sexual content and several videos have been banned, edited, or forced to broadcast late at night. Banning a music video can't do an artist or band any harm. It's all great publicity for record sales. These days, banned clips are often leaked Internet sites like YouTube, so we get to see them anyway. Some psychologists warn of the effects of sexual content in videos on the young. Girls sometimes want to copy the dress (or lack of!) and behavior of the gyrating stars when they don't have the emotional maturity to cope. Both girls and boys think that they must achieve physical perfection and an obsession with body image can lead to unnecessary dieting. Personally, I think subtlety is sexier. The film directors of the 1940s and 1950s had to be subtle to get around the censors. They played with symbolism and coded dialogue and this is often more sensual than graphic scenes. The sexiest video I have ever seen is the one for Chris Issak's Wicked Game. Chris and model Helena Christensen are on a beach with a lapping ocean. The guitar is mournful. It's not what happens that is thrilling; it's what nearly happens. They tease each other by almost kissing. You think she's going to take her bikini off but she doesn't. Contrast this with Duran Duran's Girls On Film video. I watched this and wondered what the fuss was all about, then realized I'd seen the cut version. The BBC banned it in the UK and MTV broadcast an edited version during daytime. At nighttime, full frontal nudity, phallic symbols and mud wrestling were on show. In the original Black Or White video before it was edited, Michael Jackson grabs his crotch and zips his pants up. We are all familiar with Michael's fondness for grabbing his crotch. It ceased to be sexy, if it ever was, and it just became a trademark like his moondance or his glove. In the censored version, the hand is traveling there but doesn't reach. MTV banned the Body Language video featuring Queen in 1982, the first such ban by the station. The version I've seen isn't at all tacky. I think it's pretty erotic in a black and white, arty sort of way. Isn't it strange how filming something in black and white gives it some sort of instant credibility? The one people still talk about is the cheesy Call On Me video for the 1980s hit record by Eric Prydz. It's another one that was cut for daytime broadcast. Tapping into that decade's obsession with aerobics classes and legwarmers (why did we find legwarmers so sexy?), the participants are perfect specimens who practise their pelvic thrusts, writhing and pouting, along with embarrassing usage of towels. The nighttime version retains breasts and buttocks. It isn't like any aerobics class I ever went to! Madonna's videos have been banned due to sexual and religious content including the MTV ban on Justify My Love, which suggests scenes of sadomasochism, cross dressing, and voyeurism. It's another black and white video, quite artfully shot and I can't see anything ugly or objectionable about it. There goes that 'it's in black and white so it must be art' again. I fall for it every time. Since the 1990s, the boundaries have been continuously pushed and previous videos that ran into trouble with the censors look tame in comparison. Music videos reflect the society that surrounds us. Elvis and his pelvis doesn't look so shocking now! Studies show that suggestive content is present in the majority of MTV videos, particularly in the hip-hop and R&B genres. If you want an example of something that some people would describe as porn, look no further than the infamous Tip Drill by Nelly. There is a lot of, shall we say. simulation. Rock too has its moments as in the video for Pussy with German industrial metal band, Rammstein. This video is supposed to show the sex act for real. The videos I found on You Tube claim to be uncensored but they blur out the interesting bits! Watch some of the videos mentioned in this article, here. I am far from prudish and anything genuinely erotic is fine by me. Of course, one person's tasteful erotica is another person's porn and vice versa. I do think there is a lack of imagination in a lot of pop, hip-hop and R&B music videos. Perhaps it's appropriate to broadcast some videos after a certain time in the evening. The trouble with having so much suggestive material is that we become desensitized to it and it loses its value. I do worry about it being in the background all the time in children's bedrooms, I hate to see women portrayed as victims, and I object to Britney Spears prancing around in a school uniform for Baby, One More Time.
