  Twilight Movie Review

Here is a LookingForClues movie review of a movie based on a hugely popular book, Twilight. At Amazon.com, this is the #1 DVD! After you read our review, why not buy a copy - seems like everyone else is buying it, might as well get yours!
Plot Synopsis: The big-screen adaptation of Twilight, Stephenie Meyer's bestselling vampire romance, is aimed squarely at its key demographic: teen girls whose idea of Prince Charming is a brooding, pale, undead teen who could kill you instantly at any moment. Such a prince is more fascinating than frightening to new girl Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart), who moves to the rainy-gray town of Forks, Wash., to live with her dad (Billy Burke), the local sheriff who's puzzled by a series of "animal attacks." On her first day at school, Bella appears to (visibly) nauseate her lab partner, Edward (Robert Pattinson). Turns out the scent of her blood is this vampire's "brand of heroin," and his struggle not to kill her causes an irresistible pull toward her. Whether he's attracted for the normal reasons or because she smells especially sweet to him is vague in the book and even less clear on-screen; nonetheless, Bella falls hopelessly in love with Edward, which sets her on a dangerous path when a few nomad vampires show up in town, one particularly keen on tracking the human. Directed by Catherine Hardwicke (Thirteen), Twilight is full of funny moments--not all of which are intentional--and the casting, from Stewart to Bella's self-absorbed friend Jessica (Anna Kendrick) is spot-on. Sinking Your Teeth Into "Twilight"

by Lynda Rey   4/15/09

Girly movies. Yeah, I don't mix too well with them. We have an awkward history. If there's no balance to be had in a girly movie, something to water down all that fluff, it wouldn't be surprising to catch me rolling my eyes at what I see. What is a girly movie? Anything with an overly mushy, unbelievable love side to it, where it's all about the love, love, love and nothing else. Oh there are a few exceptions to the rule, however. Not even my reaction to the excessive mush can prevent me from appreciating the depiction of love in movies, at least sometimes, especially if it's unique. To this day I'm still surprised even "The Notebook" was able to lure me into its grasp while presenting itself as a pretty sweet love story. It's unrealistic and hard to believe, but what a great possibility to hope for, in the real world, that is.

That all being said, we now have this girly type of a movie by the name of "Twilight," the film version of the first book of a 4 part series. For those who are familiar with the Twilight Saga, it's no secret that this radical love story of a movie is a major girl magnet, and many a male ran for the hills upon its release. I personally knew nothing of this movie, and upon viewing the original teaser trailer, my response was simply, "I guess that looks interesting." Vampire movies tend to be intriguing. But then I heard about how obsessive females were about the movie (and only females), how every teenager and her mother will be viewing it, and how utterly crazy people were going for it. I didn't understand why, and those facts turned me away from it. "There's just no way I want to see a dinky love story geared for teenage girls," I remember thinking, and I left it at that.

It might have stayed that way too if the opportunity to view "Twilight" didn't present itself to me. Nothing else to do and nowhere else to go usually means that a trip to the movies is inevitable. An invite by my sister to see it was where it all began for me. And that, my friends, is how "Twilight" managed to seep into my brain. I willingly took part of this supposed "Twilight phenomenon" and as painful as it can be to admit sometimes, most definitely enjoyed it. Not only is the concept intriguing, as many vampire movies can be, but the execution of the story on the big screen somehow worked. It didn't at all feel like a movie strictly geared for the minds of a younger generation, even despite the fact that it's a perfect depiction of a girl experiencing her first love and refusing to let it go, much like so many young females go through.

"Twilight" adds a nice twist to many sorts of love stories of a girl and a guy falling in love when they shouldn't be. Bella, a rather simple city girl portrayed rather nicely by actress Kristin Stewart, decides to move to a small town that happens to be the total opposite of what she prefers, the total opposite of what would be a normal world for her. And in this very world, our frail, klutzy human girl meets and is very intrigued by a pale stranger by the name of Edward, our vampire brought to life by the ruggedly handsome and new heartthrob Robert Pattinson. After saving her life in a very inexplicable way, Bella becomes more fascinated with Edward, while he, for his own reasons, feels the same. In time, their love grows for each other at an unstoppable rate. Though their relationship in this movie is rather rushed in comparison to the book, it plays out quite nicely in its own right. The premise for this sort of movie always fascinates me, a beauty falling in love with a beast. Love that shouldn't exist, but does. A human falling in love with a known killer of humans, a vampire. "So the lion fell in the love with the lamb," the character Edward so eloquently states, and yes, it is really rather fitting.

So for those who are just dying to know, is "Twilight" loyal to its source, the book by Stephenie Meyer? Some say yes, some say no. Personally, I say yes and no. While the concept is still very much the same, and many direct lines were taken straight from the book, the execution of certain crucial scenes were a little more watered down than they should have been, thus lacking essential depth for making the scene work. The book was thorough, but the movie, not so much. However, we all know books hardly can ever be portrayed in their fullest on the big screen. For that reason alone, one can "forgive" the creators of "Twilight" for the decisions they've made. We did still get the movie, after all, and helped it become a success. Still, this movie should have been so much more, even though it was still successful. What shouldn't happen is the book's story being cast by the wayside, or scenes being changed altogether for no real purpose. So yes, "Twilight" both worked and didn't work, but fortunately, what worked was all that was needed to green light its followers, "New Moon" and "Eclipse," and as a newborn fan, I cannot wait to see the results of future films.

All in all, this is a rather spruced up DVD for any fan's collection, be it the fans of the books, the fans of love stories, or the fans of simply movies. Trust me, like Bella in the world of vampires, this one will definitely somehow find its way to fit into your world. For the 2 disc edition, the extras are good enough to sink your teeth into, like deleted and extended scenes, some of which should never have been cut and others that were best to be left cut. To further add to the goodies of the 2 disc edition, there are a few music videos, trailers, a 7 part documentary on the bringing to life of the movie from book to screen, and my personal favorite: footage of the stars of the film at a local comic con interacting with all their fans. All giggles and squeals aside, the piece is a real treat. "Twilight" is definitely one of a kind, and it can lure anyone in, not just teenage girls. When my own father and my sister's husband, two males, stand behind a movie such as this, you know something was done right. So go on and take a bite out of this one, folks. It's quite the delicacy.
