Twilight - Teen Book Sensation! And Now, Twilight the Movie. by Kenny Crane   11/1/08 On November 21, 2008, the highly anticipated movie, Twilight, hits the silver screen. For teens, this is the biggest thing since Harry Potter. The movie is based on the Twilight book series, written by newcomer Stephenie Meyer. If you don't know what Twilight is about, according to the movie website, "TWILIGHT is an action-packed, modern-day love story between a teenage girl and a vampire." Seventeen year old Bella Swan has moved to Forks, Washington to live with her father. At school, she notices a strange group of students that are attractive but like to keep to themselves. One of the group, Edward Cullen, is in her Science class. They are drawn to each other and in time, Bella discovers that Edward and his group are Vampires! In the course of four books - Twilight, New Moon, Eclipse, and Breaking Dawn - the story of the budding relationship is told. The couple fall in love and want to spend eternity together. However, Edward will be on Earth forever, and is frozen at the physical age of 17. Bella is aging normally and decides that she wants to be just like Edward. While this relationship develops, another character is part of the drama - Bella's family friend Jacob. At first, Jacob brings normalcy to Bella's atypical world. But it isn't long before we (and Bella) learn that Jacob is destined to periodically turn into a Werewolf! TwitterTwilight! Thanks Stephenie Meyer is in her mid-30s and lives in Arizona with her husband and three boys. Just a few years ago, she began her writing career. Twilight was her first novel and quickly became a huge success. Stephenie was chosen by booksellers as one of the most promising new authors of 2005. The idea for the Twilight characters came to her in a dream. She joined a writing group online and found some publishers' addresses. Stephenie sent out 15 query letters and was fortunate to get a reply from one. Publisher "Little, Brown Young Readers" must be glad that they signed Meyer; the books have become Young Adult classics! Now, the movie is about to hit. There is huge anticipation among fans of the Twilight series. And there are many fans! For example, there are several groups of videomakers on YouTube who vlog about the books and their favorite characters. One of the most popular groups is TeamTwilighter. They are a group of young people who are each assigned to make a video on a given day of the week. They currently have 145 videos and almost 800 subscribers. Be sure to check out their recent videos on their website! The Twilight movie trailer can be seen on the Homepage of the TeamTwilighter site. Here are a few details about the movie. Bella is played by Kristen Stewart, Edward by Robert Pattinson, Jacob by Taylor Lautner. It is being released by Summit Entertainment and directed by Catherine Hardwicke. The soundtrack should be rockin'! There will be tracks by Muse, Paramore, Linkin Park, Perry Farrell and others. On Amazon, 1903 out of 2630 reviewers gave Twilight 5 stars. But 198 gave it one star. Those that don't like the book complain about the message it imparts to its young readers. One reviewer said this about the message, "Girls, life is not worth living unless you have your man. It's okay to have no dreams, ambitions, hobbies, interests, goals, ideas, friends, etc... as long as you have your man. It's okay, and in fact desirable that you stay with a man forever, even though he may very likely kill you, or at least injure you, in the future. Growing into mature adulthood and eventually old age is a fate worse than death. True Love is based on appearances and physical aspects." Other negative reviewers point to the poor relationship between Bella and her father, and the boring dialogue from Edward. If you've read the books, what do you think about them?
