  Massage for Relaxation

Do you have stress in your life? Do you need to find a way to relieve some of the tension that this modern world subjects us to? Well, there are people who have become proficient at helping to alleviate this condition. They are professional massage therapists. Below, we present an article that describes Esalen Massage. This type of Swedish-influenced massage focuses on releasing stress and physical tension.

There are other ways to relieve physical stress. Exercise is almost like an internal massage. If you can find an activity that you enjoy, and do it on a regular basis, you'll reduce stress and increase your level of fitness. Pick an activity and try to do it at least three times a week. You can try jogging, walking, gardening, playing tennis or handball or racquetball, dancing, lifting weights, martial arts or even yoga. If you regularly exercise at a level that raises your heart rate, you'll probably lose some weight. For more information on weight loss and exercise, please visit our page on Weight Loss Tips.

Peace of mind also reduces stress and it's effect on us. We need to spend time each day nourishing our mental and spiritual health. One can obtain great strength when you give up your worries to God. For more information on this, please visit our page on The Power of Prayer.

Massage for Relaxation

by Arlene Mason   5/9/05

When you are tense with the stress of daily living, a massage can make everything feel better. The type of massage you need is not the brutal beating that is portrayed on the television, but rather a gentle soothing rub. This form of massage is called Esalen Massage. This method concentrates on the gentleness of touch and the energy generated from the touch; it is a comforting way to release tension and stress.

One way to get a massage is to look in the phone book or on the Internet for a massage therapist that specializes in Esalen Massage. These technicians usually charge $40 to $75 or more an hour. A massage seldom lasts longer than an hour, but you will want to go back often. Some insurance will pay for the services of a massage therapist. Be sure to check your policy, you may be surprised.

The typical massage will take place in a room lit by aromatic candles, with soothing music or nature sounds in the background. The mood will be calm; nothing is rushed or hurried. You will be asked to disrobe and lay on the table. You will have a sheet covering you. Starting on your back, the therapist will run his/her hands gently around your head and shoulders. Then working under the sheet he/she will massage all the way down to your feet. Then you will turn over on your stomach and the therapist will work their way up from your feet to your back. The whole time they will be touching you and massaging your body. The motion will be circular and gentle; the therapist will increase pressure as needed to relieve specific tensions. They will be able to tell which parts need more attention and may spend more time in these areas. Most people hold tension and stress in their neck and back. That is why these places are first and last on the massage schedule.

The therapist is not the only one who has a job to do during the massage. You need to relax, breathe deeply, and think about nothing. Clear your mind, and concentrate on the therapists' touch. Many people become so relaxed during the massage that they will go to sleep right there on the table. For most, this is the first good sleep they have gotten in a long time. The stress and tension will have gone right out of their body. Other people feel so refreshed after a massage that they can continue with their daily activities and even face the coming week.

Usually, one massage a week is sufficient for stress reduction. Often the benefits of one massage will last for several weeks. It is a marvelous experience and well worth the undertaking.
