Drown not, The Lady in the Water
by Lynda
Rey 2/2/07
He's called Manoj Nelliyattu Shyamalan, but you may better know him as "M.
Night Shyamalan ."
His name already has that memorable appeal, that certain look to it that you'd expect
to find attached to an equally memorable movie. It's been about a decade since he's
made his presence known to all those moviegoers out there, especially me, but it was
still enough to gain him the popularity that only the likes of Steven Spielberg, Ridley
Scott, or George Lucas had been able to wallow in. For a lot of people, it all started
with that highly successful blockbuster known as "The
Sixth Sense "
It caught moviegoers by surprise since it seemingly came out of nowhere, that now
famous movie about a boy who sees and interacts with dead people, and that had the
most unexpected twist in movie history, at least in the views of many moviegoers.
Inevitably, it made us want more of what Shyamalan had to offer. Just what else was
this mystery man and newcomer director concocting in his head that can possibly beat
such a movie?
And that's exactly the sort of thinking that still tends to dominate many movie fans'
minds. With each new film, there should be new twists, or so that's what a common
belief is among 'Sixth
Sense '
fans. It's difficult to blame them, though; someone who told such a great story once
certainly should be able to tell an even greater one with an even greater twist. Personally,
though, I branched out in a different direction, and wanted to become more than just
a 'Sixth
Sense '
fan. I wanted to become an M.
Night Shyamalan fan.
Sure, unexpected twists at the ends of movies are definitely unforgettable moments
to experience, moments that we all wish we could experience over and over again as
if each time is like the first time, but I dared to want to look beyond the movie
itself. I wanted to embrace the story being told to me.

"Lady
in the Water ,"
though unfortunately poorly reviewed by numerous critics out there, is just such a
story-telling movie for me. It's a sharp contrast to the likes of Shyamalan 's
former movies, but it still has its own uniqueness that gives it an original flare.
I admit, though, that I was indeed expecting something different than what I was shown.
For a slight moment, I wanted that infamous twist that Shyamalan had
caused himself to become famous for, but I kept an open mind, and sought out the story
instead. Literally, this movie is a bedtime story come to life. As a result of this,
it harbors a childlike innocence that is rather sweet and charming. I found myself
getting really immersed into this story, wondering how it would end, regardless of
whether or not there's a new twist to behold. The best and most fitting fact of all
is that this lady in the water we are introduced to is named "Story."
Numerous characters with such striking personalities are all a part of the blend,
and gradually we are brought into their own stories. Little do we or the characters
know, though, their stories all have a specific purpose that will inevitably intertwine
to combat the drama that unfolds before them. In an apartment complex known as "The
Cove," a mysterious woman, played to sweet perfection by young Bryce
Dallas Howard ,
comes to the aid of Mr. Heeb, a stuttering resident handyman who is summoned for just
about any job the apartment tenants can think of. Heeb, who is brilliantly brought
to life by Paul
Giamatti ,
is a caring man who emanates his own sense of innocence from his golden, but very
hurting heart. After rescuing him from almost certain death, Story begins to share
her true purpose to him, and he finds himself becoming more needed than he ever had
been before. Story is, as the title of the movie suggests, a lady in the water of
the complex's pool, sent out from her world to save mankind from self-destruction,
a role that her people had achieved in the past before mankind parted and went their
own way. But like angels sent down from heaven, these creatures were sent out of the
abyss in the hopes of once more fulfilling their called mission. Unfortunately, there
are villains, wolf-like creatures with red eyes, jagged fur and a bite to kill, sent
out to destroy these messengers to permanently alter their plans.
There is real depth to this movie, though, despite it being childlike in its storytelling
mode. There may be heroes and villains, but there is also sacrifice and true human
compassion intricately weaved in the plot, factors that can too often be limited in
the real world. That very fact is probably one of the many reasons I've come to adore
this movie. Unfortunately, there is no expanded edition available, but there's still
a nice supply of special features on the single disc release. Simply put, the core
of this movie is people who make choices to better the futures of everyone else at
the expense of themselves, which is true and genuine sacrifice. By the end of the
movie, almost every character we get to know achieves that very mission in his or
her own special way. M.Night
Shyamalan is
one amazing story-teller in this movie, and the result is pure innocence.
Lynda is 25 years old, lives in Indiana, and hopes to
one day pursue a career working with animals. She enjoys many forms of self-expression,
including art, poetry, and writing, which is one of the latter additions to her list
of hobbies.
